The ultimate spot for camping, snorkelling, fishing, four-wheel driving and sunset watching. 

Where is Lucky Bay?

When you hear Lucky Bay you think of the famous beach in Esperance, right? Well this isn’t the Lucky we are talking about, this spot is 30 minutes south of Kalbarri.

It is located 5 hours and 53 minutes from Perth’s city centre.

How do I get to Lucky Bay?

Lucky Bay is easy to get too, in fact the first time we visited, we got there in the dark… although, we don’t recommend that! Finding a camp in the dark is not fun! Pretty much it is a left off George Grey Drive onto Balline Road as shown in the screenshots. You just follow Balline road in until you reach the Lucky Bay grounds.

Camping at Lucky Bay

Lucky Bay is now run by Department of Parks and Wildlife (DPAW) and cost us $15 a night. This spot has camping among the dunes for tents and camper vans, as well as camping on the beach for those with a chemical toilet. It is a nature-based camping area, so you do need to be fully self-sufficient. In terms of facilities, there are long-drop toilets, bins and a chemical toilet dump point. However, there is no access to fresh water so you will need to bring that with you.

Camping in the dunes

We opted for a spot amongst the dunes as it got pretty windy at night time. We were also able to have a fire between 6pm and 7am. There were fire pits in some of the sites, but we created our own with some rocks as our site didn’t have one.

Each night we would walk up to the top of the dunes behind our site to watch the sunset which was absolutely magical!

Remember that you can not camp on the beach unless you have a chemical toilet, there is heaps of signs showing the boundaries, you can’t miss it. The ranger was around everyday checking up on the campers.

What is there to do at Lucky Bay?

We started our first day by exploring the fringing reef. We saw heaps of cool little shells and Keelan found a dead squid, which we used for fishing bait.

We then went and had a snorkel in the Lagoon and went for an explore of the dunes in the car.
